If you’ve never had a psychic reading before, you might be wondering what you need to do to get ready. The honest answer? Not very much at all. But a few simple things can make the difference between a good experience and a truly meaningful one.

I’ve been giving readings for many years, and I can tell you that the clients who get the most out of their sessions tend to share a few things in common. None of it is complicated — it’s really about showing up with the right mindset.

Think About What You’d Like Guidance On

You don’t need a long list of prepared questions. But it helps to have a gentle sense of what’s on your mind. Are you hoping to hear from a loved one who’s passed? Are you looking for clarity about a relationship, your career, or a decision you’re facing? Having even a loose intention helps focus the energy of the reading and means nothing important gets missed.

I’d suggest jotting down two or three things that matter most to you. Not a script — just a few words to remind yourself. Many of my clients find that their questions get answered before they even ask them, but having that little list in your pocket gives you peace of mind.

You Don’t Need to “Believe” — Just Be Open

I’m not asking you to arrive fully convinced that the spirit world exists. Healthy scepticism is absolutely fine. What helps is simply being open to the experience rather than actively trying to block it. Think of it like trying a new restaurant — you don’t have to be certain you’ll love the food, but walking in with your arms folded saying “I won’t enjoy this” isn’t going to help anyone.

The people who get the most from a reading are usually those who arrive curious rather than convinced. That open, relaxed state makes everything flow more naturally.

Give Yourself Time to Settle

If you can, try not to rush into your reading straight from a stressful meeting or the school run. Even five minutes of quiet beforehand can make a real difference. Take a few deep breaths. Put your phone on silent. Give yourself permission to be present.

For online sessions via Zoom, find a quiet spot where you won’t be interrupted. Make sure your internet connection is reliable, and settle in somewhere comfortable. It’s your time — treat it that way.

What NOT to Do

There are a few things that can actually get in the way of a good reading. Try to avoid:

Testing the medium. Walking in with a secret “password” you want your loved one to say, or arms-folded challenges like “prove it”, creates resistance that makes the connection harder. Spirit communication doesn’t work like a telephone — messages come through in the way that’s right for that moment.

Giving too much information. You only need to confirm or deny what I tell you with a simple yes or no. You don’t need to fill in the details — that’s my job. If I’m getting something right, a simple nod is all I need.

Expecting a specific person to come through. I can’t guarantee who will make a connection during your reading. Sometimes it’s exactly who you hoped for; sometimes it’s someone unexpected who has an important message. Trust the process.

After Your Reading

Give yourself time afterwards. A reading can be emotional, uplifting, or simply a lot to take in. Some people like to sit quietly for a while; others prefer to ring a friend and talk it all through. There’s no right way. I’d suggest keeping a journal or making a few notes while it’s fresh — you might find that things which didn’t quite make sense during the session click into place over the days that follow.
