Let me guess — you’ve been thinking about booking a reading for a while now. Maybe months. Maybe years. But every time you get close, a little voice says: “What if it’s scary?” or “What if nothing happens?” or “What if I cry in front of a stranger?”

I hear this all the time, and I want you to know something: those feelings are completely normal. Almost everyone feels some version of nervous before their first reading. So let me walk you through what actually happens, because the reality is probably very different from what you’re imagining.

It’s Not Like the Films

Let’s get this out of the way first. There are no dark rooms, no crystal balls, no dramatic music. When you come to see me, it’s more like having a cup of tea with a friend who happens to receive messages from the spirit world. We’ll sit comfortably, have a chat, and I’ll share what I’m being shown or told.

If we’re meeting on Zoom, it’s even more relaxed — you’re in your own home, probably in your pyjamas (I won’t judge). The important thing is that you feel safe and comfortable.

What Happens at the Start

I’ll usually begin by explaining how I work. Every medium is different, and I think it’s important you understand my approach before we begin. I’ll tell you what to expect, how to respond (simple yes or no answers are perfect), and reassure you that there’s nothing you can do wrong.

Then I’ll take a moment to connect. This isn’t dramatic — I might close my eyes briefly or simply go quiet for a moment. I’m tuning in to the energy around you and inviting anyone in the spirit world who has a connection to you to step forward.

How Messages Come Through

Spirit communication is subtle. I might see images in my mind’s eye, hear words or names, feel physical sensations, or simply “know” something. It’s not like having a phone conversation with someone on the other side — it’s more like interpreting a language of feelings, symbols, and impressions.

Sometimes the messages are incredibly specific — a name, a place, a memory that only you and your loved one would know. Other times they’re more general but deeply meaningful. And occasionally, something won’t make sense straight away but clicks into place days or weeks later when you speak to another family member or find something in a drawer.

Will I Hear From Who I Want To?

This is one of the most common worries, and I’ll be honest with you: I can’t promise that a specific person will come through. What I can tell you is that whoever does connect usually has the most important message for you at that moment. Sometimes it’s exactly who you hoped for. Sometimes it’s your nan popping in first to say she’s looking after the person you really came to hear from.

It’s a bit like a family gathering — you can’t always control who speaks first, but they’re all there because they love you.

What If I Get Emotional?

You might. And that’s absolutely fine. Tears in a reading aren’t a sign that something’s gone wrong — they’re usually a sign that something’s gone right. When a message lands and you feel that connection with someone you’ve lost, it can be overwhelming in the best possible way.

I always have tissues handy, and I’ll never rush you. This is your time. There’s no judgement here — only compassion.

What If Nothing Happens?

It’s rare, but occasionally a connection doesn’t come through as strongly as we’d both like. If that happens, I’ll always be upfront with you. I’d rather be honest than make things up. A good medium will never tell you what they think you want to hear — they’ll tell you what they’re actually receiving.

If this does happen, it’s not because your loved ones don’t want to communicate. Sometimes the timing simply isn’t right, or grief can temporarily create a kind of energetic block. It doesn’t mean you should give up.

The Honest Truth

Most people leave a reading feeling lighter, more peaceful, and often smiling. The nervousness almost always fades within the first few minutes. And the most common thing I hear afterwards? “I wish I’d done this sooner.”

Still feeling unsure? Let’s have a chat first.

There’s no pressure and no obligation — just a friendly conversation to see if a reading feels right for you. Or if you’re ready to take the leap, you can book a private reading directly.
